Statement from the Center for Democracy Foundation on the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty
In Serbia, according to the latest data from the National Statistical Office (NSO), 19.9% of citizens live at risk of poverty, while 27.2% of the population is exposed to the risk of poverty or social exclusion. The elderly and the unemployed are particularly affected, indicating a serious lack of a systemic approach to combating poverty.
The Center for Democracy Foundation (CDF) actively advocates for achieving Sustainable Development Goal 1 – eradicating poverty, in line with the United Nations 2030 Agenda, which has also been adopted by the Republic of Serbia. Together with partners within the “SDGs for All” platform, we are working to ensure that no one is left behind and that the most vulnerable groups in society receive adequate support.
Within the Platform, CDF emphasizes the need to adopt a Social Protection Strategy, a key planning document that has been awaited for years. This document would enable long-term reforms of the social protection system, ensuring the protection of social rights guaranteed by the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia.
Current measures are insufficient to provide an adequate response to the needs of the most vulnerable. It is essential to create systemic and sustainable measures and to develop a system of social services, primarily at the local level, to ensure a dignified life for all citizens.
