Women face many forms of discrimination in the labour market in Serbia, both when looking for employment and in the workplace. In 2013, the Center for Democracy Foundation launched and implemented the
"Equal at Work"
project. The aim of the project was to strengthen capacities of local CSOs and promote their role in representing interests and voicing the concerns of women in the labour market, including, terms and conditions of employment, exercise of their labour rights and self-employment opportunities in their local communities. The project encouraged participating SCOs to address these issues further and initiated cooperation with trade unions, associations of employers and local businesses.

Affirmative Action Policy  

The project strengthened the cooperation between the Foundation and the Gender Equality Directorate within the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Policy. 

Project components and achievements 

• A three-day training for 20 NGO representatives from South and South East Serbia and Vojvodina. 
• A workshop on gender discrimination for 25 young journalists
  and senior year students of journalism, focusing on the existing challenges faced by women in the labour market. 
• Two round-table discussions
  held in Niš and Novi Sad
  with 30 interested local contributors.
   
• Two street campaigns held in Niš and Novi Sad
  provided an opportunity to talk to the public about labour rights, employment and labour discrimination. 

Synergy with other Foundation projects was achieved by linking all "Equal at work" project activities with the

web portal and through other social media sites. 

The project was implemented in cooperation with the NGO Together, together from Belgrade and the Timok Club from Knjaževac. Financial support for the implementation of the project was received from USAID through the Institute for Sustainable Communities.
